Road Safety (Traffic) Regulations 1988 - Road Safety (Vehicles) Regulations 1988
PROTECTIVE HELMETS FOR MOTOR VEHICLE USERS
Regulation 1503 (5) of the Road Safety (Traffic) Regulations 1988 and regulation 1004 of the Road Safety (Vehicles) Regulations 1988 require persons riding on or driving motor cycles and 2 and 3 wheeled motor vehicles to wear a protective helmet of a type approved by the Road Traffic Authority.
In accordance with those regulations I, Ronald Smith, delegate of the Road Traffic Authority approve helmets that comply with:
(a)
Australian Standard 1698-1974, "Protective Helmets for Vehicle Users", approved by the Standards Association of Australia on 27 September 1974 and as amended by Amendment No 1. of September 1977 and Amendment No 2. of May 1978 subject to the deletion of paragraph (g) of clause 14 of the Standard, and the inclusion in its place of the following paragraph --
(g) The registered certification mark of the Standards Association of Australia encircled by the words
     "Approved to Australian Standard 1698.": or -
(b)
Australian Standard 1698-1980, "Protective Helmets for Vehicle Users", subject to the deletion of paragraph (g) of clause 14 of the Standard, and the inclusion in its place of the following paragraph --
(g) The registered certification mark of the Standards Association of Australia encircled by the words
     "Manufactured to Australian Standard 1698."

Australian Standard 1698-1974, "Protective Helmets for Vehicle Users", approved by the Standards Association of Australia on 27 September 1974 and as amended by Amendment No 1. of September 1977 and Amendment No 2. of May 1978 subject to the deletion of paragraph (g) of clause 14 of the Standard, and the inclusion in its place of the following paragraph --
(g) The registered certification mark of the Standards Association of Australia encircled by the words
     "Approved to Australian Standard 1698.": or -
(b)
Australian Standard 1698-1980, "Protective Helmets for Vehicle Users", approved by the Standards Association of Australia on 27 August 1980 subject to the deletion of paragraph (g) of clause 14 of the Standard, and the inclusion in its place of the following paragraph --
(g) The registered certification mark of the Standards Association of Australia encircled by the words
     "Manufactured to Australian Standard 1698."
Notice is further given that pursuant to paragraph 31 (1) (f) of the Motor Car Act 1958 and Section 109 of the Transport Act 1983, the Road Traffic Authority has approved protective helmets complying with Australian Standard 1698-1974 or Australian Standard 1698-1980
